La contribution de Jeff Mills au secteur des musiques électroniques est légendaire. Aux côtés des artistes Monolake, DJ Pete, Chloé et Myako, ce pionnier de la techno sera au LiFe à Saint-Nazaire samedi 9 mai pour une grande nuit clubbing qui ouvre son dance-floor de 23h à 6h du matin. Rencontre avec ce DJ exceptionnel de Détroit qui est toujours épris de fièvre créatrice.

Quelles sont vos envies de jouer du moment ?
Pour satisfaire mes envies personnelles et les besoins de mon travail, j’écoute généralement beaucoup de choses. Actuellement j’écoute Bod Didley, Electric Light Orchestra, Todd Rundren…et beaucoup de Miles Davis. Je m’imprègne de ces compositeurs, de leurs arrangements, de leurs choix musicaux (instruments, temps, espaces, textures) qui tracent les chemins musicaux de leurs œuvres. Tout cela m’aide dans mon approche de la musique techno. Si Je tend de revenir à ce qui m’a influencer dans mon enfance, j’aime beaucoup explorer aussi de nouvelles choses, tenter d’aller vers l’inattendu, la surprise, sans doute à l’inverse de ce que la musique électronique nous propose aujourd’hui. Le dramatique et l’intriguant capte mon attention.

 Quelle excitation trouvez-vous à jouer Live ?
Les réactions spontanées et singulières du public provoquent une sensation unique. Ses silences peuvent être aussi synonymes d’une écoute attentive.

Jouer dans une base sous-marine, au LiFE (Lieu international des Formes Émergentes, à Saint-Nazaire), avec Jeff Mills, Chloé, Monolake et Myako, ça vous dit quoi ?
Même si je ne suis évidemment pas un fan de tout ce qui y fait penser à la guerre, j’espère que le lieu sera à la hauteur des espérances. Je suis plus branché sur l’usage artistique que sur l’aspect historique du site. L’acoustique devrait être incroyable comme le son n’a que peut d’espace pour s’échapper. Je prépare un set avec de la nouvelle musique et testerai de nouvelles idées liées à de futurs projets.
Je n‘ai pas souvent eu la chance de jouer avec un tel programme. Je les connais tous sauf Myako. J’ai joué récemment au Rex avec Chloé. Elle est fantastique. Pete et moi  allons nous retrouver et j’ai des amis communs avec Robert sur Berlin.
 
Qu’est-ce que “Grande nuit électronique” pour vous ?
Etre sur que la techno musique sera jouée avec la plus grande ferveur qui soit. A partir de là, le  public devrait entendre et ressentir quelque chose qu’il ne pourra oublier. C’est avec cet objectif que nous allons tous jouer ce soir là.

What are your current musical  desires?
I typically listen to many things  throughout the year. Genres for my personal desire and some things for music  production. Right now, I'm listening to Bo Diddley, Electric Light Orchestra,  Todd Rundren, Biggie Smalls and a lot of Jazz from Miles Davis.   For production, I'm listening to  Vangelis and Hans Zimmer.
I think that what  I'm trying to do  is extract the overall message that the composer  is conveying through their arrangements. Their choice  of instruments, timing/pace, texture and the way they set the  scenario. It helps me in the way, I can approach Techno Music. I tend not  to go back to my childhood influences so often. Mainly for reassurance of  things I now believe, but its not often. Instead, I really like to explore new  things. Artists that I wasn't aware of or had never really listened closely  too in the past. For production, I very much in a "Suspense" mode. Anything  dramatic and suspenseful gets my close attention. Perhaps this is almost the  opposite of what Electronic Dance Music is doing right now, but I feel  that its more interesting to ready myself again to expect  the un-expected.    
 
Which excitement do you find in playing live ?
The sudden and  sporadic reactions from the people is always a unique feeling. Sometimes,  a eerie quiet is interesting too, this can mean that the people are listening  very closely to what is being played for them.  

If we tell you that you will play on may 9th in a  submarine  base, at the Life (International space for emerging arts), in  Saint-Nazaire ? What do you think about that ?
I think its  interesting. Though I'm not a fan of War and all the things and feelings  within it, but I hope the location and atmosphere enhances the expectations.  I'm more interested in the Art Space usage than I am with the History of  the location. Acoustically, it should be incredible as the  sound has little room to escape. I'm preparing new music for the set and will  test a few other ideas for future projects.

About playing in the  same space as Chloé, Monolake, Pete and Myako?
It's not often  that I have the chance to play with such a great line up.  I know all,  but Myako. I've played with Chloe recently at The Rex. She's fantastic. Pete  and I go way back and Robert have many mutual friends in Berlin.  
 
What’s a big electro night for you ?
Making sure that Techno Music is being  played in the best and impactful way.From this, the audience might  hear or feel something that they might want to keep in the memory. A  reaction to what we'll all create on this night.
